General Instructions For The Examiner:
- The odor identification test typically takes less than 15 minutes to administer.
- For each trial, remove one inhaler. Pop off the top and present the inhaler to the subject, holding it about an inch from the nostril(s).
- Ask the subject to choose the perceived odor from the available alternatives for the trial and mark it on the response form. If no odor is perceived, the subject should still choose one option.
- At the end of the test, count the number of correct choices as the score out of 16.
Considerations:
- The test can still be performed as a bilateral (both nostrils) or as a unilateral evaluation. For unilateral testing, close the nostril of the side not being tested without distorting the opening of the other nostril.
- If a subject has significant nasal congestion (even in a single nostril) on the day scheduled for evaluations, consider postponing testing.
- Both the tester and the subject should avoid wearing perfume, creams, or other strong fragrances during testing.
- Wash hands thoroughly with an unscented soap. For smokers whose hands smell like tobacco, wearing odorless, unscented gloves is recommended.
